Just six weeks ago, the world watched as a 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti with multiple aftershocks in tow. The Civil Protection Agency of the Government of Haiti has reported 212, 000 dead and more than 300,000 injured according to the United Nations. The reconstruction of Haiti will take years, but the restoration of the Haitian people’s hope has already begun.
Another tragic disaster took place on February 27, 2010 as an 8.8 magnitude hit Chile, the fifth strongest in 100 years according to the U.S Geological Survey. As of Wednesday, March 03, 2010 the death toll reached 799, 544, with most of those deaths due to a collapsed sewer. The city of Santiago has suffered significant damage but residents are now able to receive electricity and water. President Barack Obama responded immediately, offering aid to the Chilean government the day of the earthquake but Chilean government was not yet accepting aid from outside sources. The Chilean government has now requested aid from the United States government. The Pacific region which was issued tsunami warnings early Saturday were cleared the following day. On Thursday, March 4, 2010 Taiwan was hit by 6.2 magnitude earthquake but luckily there have been no deaths reported.
