The hottest way to break into the music biz as a college student is to snag a College Marketing Representative position. College Marketing Reps are responsible for the promotion of a record label’s products and artists to students on campus and the surrounding area. Being a CMR is the latest way to learn about the music business, gain marketing experience, and network with the who’s who in the industry. Senior radio production major, Brittani Riddle H.U.’s college rep for Def Jam, is definitely making things happen for her blossoming career. This ATL go-getter is a member of The National Council of Negro Women, intern for Hidden Beach Records, and program director for WHBC. Her ultimate goal is to become a program director at a radio station and a record label representative for several different markets. At this rate, her goals may not be far off.
The Grind: What does your job as a College Marketing Rep consist of?
Brittani Riddle: Every month they have a conference call for all the representatives and they talk to us about different plans for each month. I get promotional items such as CDs and posters and make sure it goes out to the campus. I am also responsible for bringing Playas Circle and The Dream to homecoming and other celebrities throughout the school year. We’re currently working on some promotional work for Rick Ross’ upcoming album release.
T.G.: How did you come across the idea of becoming a CMR?
B.R.: An alumnus approached me and asked if I was interested in doing some promotional work for Def Jam.
T.G.: What are some of the perks?
B.R.: It makes it easy to get some promotional items. Interacting with the different artists when they come by, and work with the label people, and get a behind the scenes look at the recording industry.
T.G.: What advice would you give to those trying to become a CMR?
B.R.: Network, first and foremost. You never know who you’re going to meet. Be determined, never let anyone stop you, especially if you are a woman, there will be a lot of people who will question you. Know that it can be a lot of fun for people who are interested in entertainment. There are a lot of long hours and you must be able to multitask.
