Designer Alexander McQueen Dies at 40

Designer Alexander McQueen was found dead Thursday at his apartment in London. He was 40. British police officials said they are not treating the death as suspicious.

McQueen’s family and representation released the following statement today via his website:

“ON BEHALF OF LEE MCQUEEN’S FAMILY, ALEXANDER MCQUEEN TODAY ANNOUNCES THE TRAGIC NEWS THAT LEE MCQUEEN, THE FOUNDER AND DESIGNER OF THE ALEXANDER MCQUEEN BRAND HAS BEEN FOUND DEAD AT HIS HOME. AT THIS STAGE IT IS INAPPROPRIATE TO COMMENT ON THIS TRAGIC NEWS BEYOND SAYING THAT WE ARE DEVASTATED AND ARE SHARING A SENSE OF SHOCK AND GRIEF WITH LEE’S FAMILY.

LEE’S FAMILY HAS ASKED FOR PRIVACY IN ORDER TO COME TO TERMS WITH THIS TERRIBLE NEWS AND WE HOPE THE MEDIA WILL RESPECT THIS.”

McQueen is touted as one of the most influential and controversial designers in fashion internationally.

“Lee McQueen influenced a whole generation of designers. His brilliant imagination knew no bounds as he conjured up collection after collection of extraordinary designs. At one level he was a master of the fantastic, creating astounding fashion shows that mixed design, technology and performance and on another he was a modern day genius whose gothic aesthetic was adopted by women the world over. His death is the hugest loss to anyone who knew him and for very many who didn’t,” said  Alexandra Shulman, British Vogue editor In a statement released today.

Tyra Banks said via twitter today, “RIP Alexander McQueen. so so sad. such a huge loss. He was one of my favorite designers. He will be missed.”

McQueen was not scheduled  in next week’s New York Fashion Week or London Fashion Week but was slated for Paris Fashion Week in March to show his ready-to-wear collection.
