Former Fugees lyricist, Wyclef Jean, may consider running for president of Haiti, a nation slowly recovering from earthquake devastation.

“Wyclef’s commitment to his homeland and its youth is boundless, and he will remain its greatest supporter regardless of whether he is part of the government moving forward … If and when a decision is made, media will be alerted immediately,” Jean’s family said in a statement to reporters.

In 2007, the current president, Rene Preval, appointed Wyclef Jean ambassador-at-large. Since the appointment, it had been rumored that Jean, 37, may run for president—Haitian presidents serve a five-year term and Preval is not eligible for re-election.

Jean was born in the greater Port-au-Prince area; his family immigrated to New York City when he was a child.

In order to participate in the presidential campaign season, a candidate must prove they have never been a citizen of a country other than Haiti, resided in the country for five consecutive years and own property in the country.

Candidates must declare their run by Aug. 7, if Jean were to enter a bid for the presidency he is expected to be one of several dozen candidates. The election is scheduled for Nov. 28.

In recent months, Wyclef Jean’s non-profit organization, Yele Haiti has been under fiscal scrutiny. Yele Haiti has since hired a new accounting firm.

Yele Haiti has received a lot of celebrity support and despite allegations the organization raised over $1 million. Recently, Sean “Diddy” Combs appeared on Larry King’s two-hour CNN special “Haiti: How Can You Help” and announced his support for Wyclef Jean and encouraged a bid from Jean for the presidency.

“I think Wyclef should run for president of Haiti after this,” Diddy said. “What he’s done, the way he’s put himself out there is truly commendable. I just pray for the people of Haiti.”

“Haiti for me is such an inspirational country. They were the first people to take back their freedom, the first people to say that we will not be slaves anymore. So growing up, the Haitian people to me were always that people I looked up to, because of their fight, the way they fought for their freedom.”

Presidential elections in Haiti have earned a tumultuous reputation. Opponents of Rene Preval have threatened the upcoming election. If Preval does not replace the electoral council, his opponents promise to block the winter election. To date, Preval has refused.

Diddy Supports Howard University Student Protest.

WASHINGTON – Students at Howard University gathered in front of the university’s administration building in protest Friday, September 4th. According to The Hilltop, university paper, in the “Take A Stand” protest students had the following demands:

1. All Students must be validated by Sept. 25, 2009 (no extensions on the deadline).
2. Howard University advances technology and goes completely paperless by the 2010-2011 school year.
3. Howard University must have a library that is open 24-hours a day by the end of the fall semester 2009.
4. Howard Financial Aid office must extend its business hours by the end of the fall semester 2009.
5. Howard must disseminate a budget visible to students that shows the allocation of student money by the end of fall semester 2009.

The protest has also garnered celebrity support from Sean “Diddy” Combs on twitter (@iamdiddy).

Chester French and Q-tip perform at Summer Stage.

Central Park was live this afternoon at the Summerstage concert with headliner Q-Tip. It was hot and there was no shade in sight but that didn’t stump the crowd’s energy. Chester French, Sweden-based group Little Dragon, and DJ Benji B got the crowd ready for “The Abstract.” Familiar also sited today included Cassie, Damon Dash, and Amanda Diva.

Duo, Chester French moved the crowd with hits from their mixtape “Jacques Jams, Vol 1: Endurance” and debut album Love The Future. DA Wallach had the crowd laughing at his dorky swag as he instructed the crowd to commence in a soul snap. “Hands up in the fucking air! We need you to snap with us in a second!”

They performed songs like “Jimmy Choos,” “C’mon” and crowd favorite “She Loves Everybody.” The pit was packed with toddlers and guests of a guest but we managed to get some video of their set, check it out:

The Queens Hip Hop legend, Q-tip gave a phenomenal performance with a live band to the at capacity venue. He performed a mix of A Tribe Called Quest classics including “Bonita Applebum,” “Scenario,” and “Sucka N*ggas” as well as “Award Tour,” in which all the die hard “real Hip Hop heads” sang word for word. Tip also performed songs from his latest album The Renaissance, such as “We Fight/We Love” and “Gettin Up.”

While Tip performed “Vivrant Thing,” Diddy danced into the press pit, hopped on stage and did his famous two-step. No one expected it (but 25 caught it on tape and video!). After ending his set, Q-tip came back on stage for “Life is Better,” and jumped in the crowd.

No one wanted Q-tip to ever leave the stage and he clearly gave all his energy to the crowd by sweating out his white tee and presumably his knee high black socks. His performance was unforgettable indeed.
